In many portions of Ala- bama the stands of corn and cotton are ns good aswas ever secn. The wheat looks green and yigorous.— ‘There is less cotton planted in the ‘Tennessee Valley than we havo ever known. Corn and wheat prospects favorable. In Texas the wheat crop has suffered much from the weather, so much so that it is estimated the harvest of this year will be one third less than it was last, notwithstanding a larger area has becn sown, and mek- ing no allowance for rust and other accidents. The best farmers all agree that the average yield of the wheat crop; throughout the country, will not reach more than ten bushels to the nere. Corn and cotton crops are very backward, but doing well. longing nd pat another in its place, bape yo hour, after it has b: ‘2 One can be built wil

less mancy, and muck [ess labor. both to the | ji

employer and the mechsnic—the me- chanical work being more simple, and much less. One can be easily ccvered and protected from the wheather, and may be made to last for many years ; and many of the farmers can repair them, modeling after the old stick. This Press is very stropg and simp’, and may be made on the plantation, by an ordivary mechanic. and managed by common laborers; and every piece of iron belonging to it can be made, or repaired at the nearest shop. The leeers of this press aro so arranges that great power is exerted on the com- pressing block, with » comparatively small expenuiture of force in the prime move, which may becither mnlual, or by horse power, The strength of one man will press a bale weighing five hundred pounds, and upwards ; and though it is construct ed to the use of horse power, very few that havo this preas, will uso borse in packing, as twovor three hands will press & bale of cotton by the time a horse or mule can be hitched and removed, or pearly so. This Press is unquestionably the speediest contrivance, or machine for baling cottou ever invented ; and its rur passing power cannot be questioned. As an evidence of its worth, ! prapose to build one of my Patent Lever Presses and test ite merits against any other cot any of the fol~ lowing Si ipph, Alabama, or Georgia, st some suitable place designated by the opposite party ; and after being fairly tested, if, ia the jadgementof twelve competent Judge i be decided that his Press can be built for less money, and that it possesses great- er compressing power with the rame amouut of force to act up! will prck more bales ina gi time with the same number of ba and thought to be more durable; or if it foueesee ‘a mejority of these advantages, will give him one half interest of my Press in said State, In cyidence of its power, | propose to press a bale of c.tton, of the usual rize, weighing 800 Ibs. with

| my own strength a’onc, for the bale,

succeed, or gives Press if J fail.

Testimonials :

Mx. J. I, Wruaxs:—I take pleasure in certifying that your Patented Press gives entire satisfaction, and consider it decidedly superior to any other mode of packing cotton known tome; it is much cheaper, more simple, and durable than the old’ Screw, and much easier to the band or mule (if one be used) in pack~ ing. Very Respectiully,

F. C. SEMMES,

Me, Wiittas:—We bave used your Patent Presses the past season, and bare fally tested them, and in our judgment they are superior to any ‘principle of baling cotton now in use, and take pleasure in recommending them to the cotton planters, and public generally.— We have likewise even your Circular, and indorse all eet forth therein. We’ are proud to know that something bee bees Invented to supersede tho Serra suckeas- fully. 1 conclusion we believe it tobe one among the best improvements of the day. Respectfully Youre,

May. McCanpie’s Lerren.—The read- cr will find elsewhere a rather singular letter from Maj. Win. H. McCardle, of Vicksbarg, in which he urges the elec- tion of colored men to Congress." We give it to the public, not that we en- dorse the views of the writer, but to show the extromes to whic some men are running.

to excite the passions of the Northern people and keep up politieal fury that will carry the Republican party suc- cessfully through the next Presiden- tial campaign. Already the radical prints tem with malevolent comments; the disturbance is, they.say, only the ‘ont cropping of the old pro-slavery in- tollerance; the resurrection seces- sion doctrine and the rekindling of the smouldering fires of an unsubdued re- bellion, which, if necessary, must be quenched in blood. A reader of northern papers would naturally con- clnde we had another “bleeding Kan- sas” down here, where political gladi- ators satiated their vindictive hate in human gore; and really we fear unless something is done to neutralize the agitation, check needy adventurers and propagandists in their efforts to excite the passions and cupidity of those whose influence they scek at the ballot box, the extravagant pictures now painted in the North may become life-pictures.

It bas been very properly observed that during four years of terrible and cruel war, we bad large districts of country where there were thousands of colored people, with scarce an able- bodied white man, or five pounds of powder, or five guns in ten miles square; and there were no insurrec- tions, no riots, nor scarce any acts of violence. Ladies lived on plantations with large numbers of colored people, without one mele protecter, and yet treatel~ with courteous respect. Now we submit if, after the war closed, and the colored man was emancipat- ed, Radical ogitators and office-seek- ers had remained at home and left the Southern people, or all races in peace, they would soon have peacefully and pleasantly adjusted themselves to the situation. The races would haye con- tinued what they were before— friends, friends from association and interest. The colored man would have accepted his new position with moderation—would have cheerfully taken servico in house and field, and regarded as his friends those who gave him honest employment and fair wages. None of the present anxiety 02 agitation would have disturbed the equanimity of the public mind. The jolored man would have gone forward 1 _ moderate and healthy develop- ment, wisely appreciating end judi- cionsly improving his sdvantages— Al oar great industrial interests would have prospered and the whole country gone forward in a prosperous carcer of recuperation and social and financial improvement. In thus allud- ing to the past we only desire to fasten the responsibility of getting up the resent antagonism, where it properly belongs, and to conjure our people to make the fature as honorable for good

years of war, whose dying echos are forever hushed. Let our aim still be to harmonize and fraternize; to infuse a new life into the dead avenues of trade, and exalt our unfortunate peo- ple; to combat the inflammatory bar- angues of the mischievous, be they from the North or South, with that calmness which becomes a quiet, dig- nified and manly submission. The North is unquestionably “master of the situation” and opposition to her will is useless; let there be none; re- main peaceable and orderly, comply- ing with the law faithfully and hon- estly, trusting that “behind a frown- ing Providence he hides a smiling face.” dishonor npon us yet, and by the help

Fonsrr Atanuep.—The Mobile Ad- vertiser's Washington correspondent informs ps that the Chronicle is filled with wonder and alarm in consequence of recent information from Baltimore, announcing that numerous volunteer military companies are organizing in that city, the members of which are drilling nightly, and perfecting them-

order in the city of Mobile. The police administration is suspended and special policemen, or members of the old force may be emplyed when neces- sary. Breaches of city ordinances will be tried as heretofore. All viola- tions of the public peace and existin orders will be dealt with by the mili- tary. Albert Pike, though a Tennessee editor, is laboring very bard to con- vince the people of Mississippi that they should voto against organining under the military bill. Ifthe Gen- eral ‘will try and relieve his own State of Brownlow’s rule and secure the ballot for the good and true Tennes- sceans, the citizens of Mississippi will endeavor to look after the intercests of their own State. Bespattering our fair women with flattery, couched in chaste rhetorique, is a shrewd plan to defeat reconstruction as proposed by Congress. In the days of the Con- federacy it did very well to teil the girls the man in the moon would hold his nose as he passed the fire-xide war- riors by; but that kind of tea-pot pat- riotism has “played out.” Our women, like the great bulk of the men, want peace and order, and aze not disposed to array themselves agninst Congress and the army and navy, with broom- sticks. The men tried that for four years with guns and failed—now Lee, the noblest Roman of them all—says peace, and a hearty compliance with the law, and we are sure that nine- tenths of those who wore the “grey”

now as when he cried “onward” in the Valley.
